Finesse and Flair at Summerwood Primary School Music Festival

Parents, Music Staff members and learners worked as a team to present a memorable Music Festival at Summerwood Primary School on 10 and 11 August 2022.



All music learners deserve a warm word of appreciation for participating in our unique Summerwood Music Festival. Parents provided appreciable assistance and optimism.


The participants had to follow a particular procedure. They had to submit a copy of their work at the adjudicator's table. They had to report to a table in they foyer of the hall 15 minutes before their performance. They had to accept the adjudicator's decisions as final. No traffic was allowed while learners were performing. Everyone who wanted to leave the hall, had to do so during the applause or at the end of a session.


After participating, each musician received and adjudicator's report and and a stamped certificate. The following accolades were awarded:

DIPLOMA: 90% and above 80 entries

GOLD: 80% and above 123 entries

SILVER: 70% and above 27 entries

BURGUNDY: 60% and above none


The adjudicator was Ms Matilda Hornsveld. She graduated with a B Mus (Performers) from the University of Pretoria. She worked as a repetitieur, coach, backstage conductor and chorus master. She worked on all the major opera productions for the State Theatre until 1993. She returned as chorus master from 1997 to 2000. During her tenure as Chorus Master, Ms Hornsveld was assistant conductor for numerous musicals, conducting two performances per week. She also worked nationally as a freelance coach, chorus master and adjudicator of choral competitions. She conducted two -productions of "Fiddler on the Roof" in Bloemfontein. During her time at the State Theatre, Ms Hornsveld did two workshop operas, "The Medium" (Menoti) and "Savitri" (Holst). She also conducted productions of "La Traviata" and "Fledermaus" in Windhoek. Ms Hornsveld is now retired and lives in Gcheberha were she is pursuing her other passions. Read more.




The programme was packed with melodious music. More than 230 entries were received. The Ensemble Section was followed by the Modern Style Music period. The Romantic Style period follow this. Then the Classic Style period was reminisced. Two Beginners Section groups performed.
